Preacher and a Hanging

By Harold Smith

My story today is about a street preacher who was out preaching one day, and some people were listening but other people were opposing him. Soon, they got really violent and hateful, and they started to come at him and one man hit him and knocked him to the ground. And the preacher lay there, and it looked like he was dead. Somebody said to the man that hit him, "There'll be a hanging for this if they catch you!" So the man was afraid and he fled for his life. He rushed down through some back alleys and over across the courtyard and then he made his way up some back stairs into a room he called his home. Only his little boy, Jimmy, was there, and Jimmy knew something was wrong. He said, "What's the matter, Dad?" "Oh, you don't have to know", the father said roughly, "Just where can I hide, Jimmy?" Jimmy looked around and he said, "Well, there's no place to hide here, unless you get under the bed". So the father got under the bed and he said, "If anybody calls for me, tell them I'm not here". He was terrified. And as he was under that bed, he sent little Jimmy out to the store to get something. Jimmy came back, and the old storekeeper had wrapped up the parcel in parts of the Bible. And he took one of those Bible pages and he read: "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment" Hebrews 9:27. And he thought, "If they find me, there'll be nothing left for me but judgment". But he read another Bible page that said: "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin" 1 John 1:7. He remembered he had heard some of this from the preacher on the street. And in all that man's struggle with what he had done and the sins that he'd committed, he thought of what God had done for him and how He sent His Son into the world to die for him. And right then and there, under that bed, he trusted in the Lord Jesus, and he was saved. He thought, "Now I'm saved and I'm going to give myself up. I'm going out and I'm going to tell them what I've done". And to his surprise, when he went out, he found that the preacher really didn't die, he was back out there preaching the Gospel. And the man went to the preacher and confessed. Then he joined the preacher, and the two of them were mightily used of God. I hope, boys and girls, that you're saved. If you're not, then put your trust in the Lord Jesus, and be saved like that man. Trust Him and be saved today!
